Actually a good deal, damn. The guy I sold my '96 855R is manual swapping it now.

I wish I would've had this idea when my sister was getting rid of hers.

I like it, but I have feeling the engine will need some work soon given it has 270k miles.
I know essentially nothing about Volvos, are these models reliable?

The Volvo inline-five is a remarkably durable engine, and it looks as though this car has had the main weak spots (rear crank seal and PCV system) taken care of. So long as it's been well looked-after, I wouldn't be afraid of that kind of mileage.
If I didn't already have any 850R wagon (although mine is automatic, at least for the moment), I'd jump on this one. Mine's got 213,000 miles on it, and still drives and runs like a much newer car.

The want is strong with this one.

I would check the compression on the motor before worrying about mileage. If it's reasonably constant and close to 130-ish psi across the board, runs smoothly with no visible leaks, and has had the proper maintenance done to it, then why not? These cars are notorious for failed odometers, so unless it has a full service history and/or a single owner from new you can never be 100% sure of the true mileage anyway, as it's impossible to read it off the instrument cluster on OBD-II cars (AFAIK).
